Tuesday Stack - Softly

One of the biggest quilting dilemmas for baby quilts seems to be what to do when you do not whether the baby is going to a boy or girl.  I have called this stack Softly because I can see it being made for a newborn baby - boy or girl.  The colours are soft and lower volume.

Beautiful Floral Blue from Riley Blake
Littlest Heartfelt Snow from Art Gallery Fabrics
Littlest Tenderness Grey from Art Gallery Fabrics
Littlest Furry Tales Minty from Art Gallery Fabrics
Honey Meadow Bees from Lewis and Irene

Soft Toy Pattern is Love Somebunny from Ric Rac and she just wanted to be in on the photo!

Tuesday Stack (but it is really Wednesday) - Glow Spring Stack

I wish I was superwoman who could pack everything into the allotted time but it does not always happen.  My yesterday was hijacked with my son's motor scooter being stolen, damaged and dumped.    As a result of that and other life things the Tuesday Stack is appearing on Wednesday (I don't think I can even say it is still Tuesday somewhere in the world).

Have I told you that I like a little yellow and pink together?  I think it looks fresh and fun and a little bit like spring in the garden (minus the weeds).

So from top to bottom:

Pretty Potent Family Unit by Anna Maria Horner (this also looks fantastic as a binding)
Nature Walk Magenta from Sarah Jane Studios
Guinea Flower by Kaffe Fassett
Quarter Moon part of Amy Butler's new Glow range
Geo Wave part of Amy Butler's Glow Range
Peace Flower again part of Amy Butler's Glow range

A Little ABC Quilt

As I start another one of these quilts I realise I did not even blog about the first one.  This quilt feels like cheating it is so quick to make.  It was one of the quilts I put together over our ANZAC weekend sewing retreat with my quilting buddies.  Adrianne ran an impromptu session on free motion quilting for some of us and got Vicki and I well on our way (I will have to check with Vicki whether I can share one of her photos here in a later post as she is a natural with the free motion quilting).  Me, not so, but I will persevere.  If you look closely you will see where I broke a needle right in the middle of the black vulture (sods law that it would be on the black).

The finished size of the quilt is 65 x 69 cm, so perfect for a stroller, change quilt, or baby capsule.

The fabric is the Alexander Henry's ABC with Me and the border is Very Duck Egg Blue Spot, which  is almost sold out but is still available in the Mini version.  The binding was a stripe I had.  The backing is a co-ordinating Alexander Henry fabric ABC to Z.

Tuesday Stack - from Mr S

This week's Tuesday stack was chosen by Mr S (my lovely husband).  For those who you have not met Mr S, he works in the shop every Saturday and some other days too.  I don't know what I would do without his support and genuine interest in fabrics, sewing and quilting.

In the shop we have a basket of toys for our smaller visitors, who are not always as interested in fabrics (who knew that was possible?) and two toys are definitely up there on the favourites list...

And the stack...

Sphere Dots by Moda
Just My Type Crossgrain by Patty Young for Michael Miller
Fly Aweigh Main Grey from Riley Blake

Tuesday Stack - Fancy Some Foxy Fabric

This week's stack is inspired by our footpath sign and the Fox Playground -Transport fabric.
I kept stacking then suddenly realised I had 9 fabrics - whoopsie!  I find buying fabrics can be a bit like that as well.

Just My Type Retro Clover Grey by Patty Young for Michael Miller
Gracie Girl Dot in Blue from Riley Blake
Chevron Grey from Riley Blake
Retro Crosshatch from Windham

We sometimes get asked to help put fabrics together for a baby quilt, when it is unknown whether the baby is going to be a boy or a girl.  This combo would be perfect for this.

I have also have a few close ups.  There is 50% off these Prints Charming Fabrics:

Florals staring from $16 per metre.

These Lotta and friends starting from $18.

And some Echinos and others.

Day 5 - Visiting Kokka in Osaka

This is what the trip is all about - fabric, fabric and more fabric.  Today we visited the Kokka offices in Osaka.  The fabric is not manufactured here but is designed in Osaka.  The offices were very casual and the designers very colourful - much what you would expect of any creative environment.  Mr Sukuki who assisted us was lovely.

Tuesday Stack by Sally

This week's Tuesday stack has been out together by Sally of Salsysafrano.  Sally is a lovely customer who is passionate about quilting.  We sell some of her lovely quilts that in store.  Her colour combinations are cheerful and usually with a wee unexpected twist, just to make things interesting.  Unfortunately in the few days since Sally chose her stack one of the fabrics sold out :0(, so is not included here, but I do not think it detracts from the beautiful selection she has made.

From top to bottom we have:

Tulips by Kokka
Alice by Kokka (one of may favourites)
Little Kita in Fog by Lotta Jansdotter
Handpicked Flowers by Jacqueline Savage McFee
Bold Blossom Grey by V & Co for Moda

I just have to share a photo of one my favourites from this stack, here is Alice:

Thank you Sally for choosing an awesome stack.

Tuesday Stack - A Bears Tale

This week's stack includes two of my favourite fabrics:  A Bear's Tale and Nordic Bear.  I have almost sold out of Nordic Bear so it is a bit of a teaser putting it in here but I just love it too much not to include it.  It is one of those fabrics that I will feel very sad about when it goes.

This stack includes:

Leafy by Kokka
Dot - Olive from Echino
A Bear's Tale By Kokka

Lesley's Tuesday Stack

What a fantastic weekend.  My sister Lesley and her husband Murray came to stay.  I asked Lesley to choose this week's Tuesday stack. Lesley is an amazing glass artist and great at putting colours together (you can see more of her work here).  Her stack is based on a pink and green theme:

From top to bottom the fabrics are:

Peppy Poppy by Michael Miller

I love this colour combo.  Lesley also added a few more bits to the stack in the way of ribbons, a pair of glass earrings that she made, and the baby shoes we make.

Hope you are having a lovely Tuesday.

Improv Blocks - the perfect choice for work procrastination

I should have been working but....

I thought I would play in my scrap bag.  I started out thinking I would make a needle book using my scraps but my blocks sort of grew.   I found this piecing method very addictive.  No measuring and in most cases I just sewed the scrap I had on to the block and trimmed it up afterwards.

Now what to do with them?  Do I just keep on going making more and join them together for a quilt?  Are they bags? My scrap bag overfloweth so there is no shortage of scraps!

I loved doing them so much I know I will do more.  Any thoughts?

Talking to Annika Wester - artist and fabric designer

You could have knocked me down with a feather when I received an email from Annika about her fabrics in my store.  For me this is like my teenage daughter getting an email from Katy Perry.  Mr S tried to be understanding about my excitement - but I don't think he quite got it.  It is a fabric and design thing after all.  An exchange of emails began and I asked if she would mind doing a blog interview....

The workspace in Annika's Paris apartment

... and she agreed.  Annika is a Swedish artist living in Paris.  Her first range of fabrics Accessory Dreams was released by Kokka late last year and as soon as I saw the fabric images I knew I had to stock Annika's fabrics.  They have a whimsical quirkiness about them.

Bags made from Owl fabric

How did you start out in your artistic career? Were you always artistic and involved in art as a child?
Yes, I did draw a lot and it came very naturally.  I got hugely inspired by comics, cartoons, fairy tales, clothes and beauty; I grew up on a farm in the Swedish countryside where talk about art was non-existing! Actually, that was good for me because it made me being eager to do this.
I studied at fine art schools for some years in my 20's and learnt about a lot of techniques in drawing, painting, print especially but I started to get hungry for getting published and I thought that illustration would be so fun to do and I worked really hard to get assignments in Stockholm and also in New York.

Annika
What inspires you in your work?
My own imagination first of all I would say to 80%. The rest is clothes, very much my own ones actually and my background, travelling, flowers & nature.

What are your favourite mediums to work in?
Thin ink pens, and then I also really like goache which leaves a dry covered surface and one has to be fast as it dries so quickly. I also paint in oil. I really like to make sketches in lead, it looks so alive then like a drawing of a person or animal could jump out of the paper.

Is your fabric range for Kokka your first? If yes are you planning some more? (I hope so)
Yes it is my first and I would love to do more! I have so many ideas that I would like to realise. With Kokka, they printed the colors exactly how I wanted and the materials are so good quality. I love how they turned out!

Do you sew? And if yes what types of things do you like to make?
Actually, I have sewn a lot and I began making my own outfits as a teenager sitting up late nights creating some original pieces to say the least.  I especially love hand-sewing fine detailed work nowadays. I plan to buy a sewing-machine soon because I hand-sewed pretty much everything else here in my home!

Some of Annka's painting - I love the plates
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a career in art and design?
To be passionate about what you do, work much, and for myself I strive to learn new things and use my imagination a lot. It is really important to have a strong portfolio.

Sometimes it is not easy and the job does not work out the way one wanted. It can be so hard to be creative just that deadline-day but amazing work can come out in the end from that dark moment.

The market goes up and down also, I had some extra jobs in my career like teaching, working as a waitress..

Of your own work what are you loving right now?
My own oil paintings on trays, and the Kokka fabrics of course. Lacoste L!ve has releasedscarves and t-shirts with a pattern I did are quite cute. I also really loved having my illustrations printed generously for a whole cosmetic line that I did for korean Etude House.

If you could meet another artist alive or dead who would you like to meet?
Oh wow.. right now I can think of the Swedish artist John Bauer would be interesting to talk to about his world of beautiful forests, trolls and other beings.

Thank you Annika.  If you would like to see more of Annika's work she blogs at http://www.annikawester.blogspot.com/

Prints Charming Quilt Pattern

When I saw this quilt in the March edition of Better Homes and Gardens I had to have it.

I love the Prints Charming range of fabrics and have most of the designs in store.  I especially like that this quilt is big blocks which shows off the fabrics and also means a quick result - just what I need about now.

Here are some photos of the Prints Charming range at the Quilt Market

I love how they have embellished the fabrics with stitching.

Going to this market is on my bucket list, anyone else fancy going?

I think I could be a stalker....

There are some fabric designers whose work I absolutely love and I could be in danger of becoming a stalker.  One such designer is Lotta Jansdotter.  I love the simplicity and cleanness of her designs, they always appear so effortless.  When I found out she had produced a range of fabrics with Wyndham I was the first in Australasia to place an order.  And the first shipment drop has been received, other fabrics in her line are expected over the coming weeks.

And the reality lives up to all my expectations...

The fabric has also popped up in various patterns and I love this Go Anywhere Bag from Noodlehead.

I am also hoping that I may be able to reveal some big news soon, it is part of the reason why I have not been blogging as much - in addition to my new interest - Pinterest.
